Responsibilities

The SuPerWorld Research Group involves technology in pervasive computing and earth observation, which touches upon research that focuses on the real world towards (contributing in) making it more sustainable. As “real world”, we refer to humans, animals and plants, as well as to the physical and urban environment. As “pervasive computing”, we refer to sensing infrastructures and equipment that measure the real world, towards precise environmental monitoring and modelling. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to conduct fundamental and/or applied research in the group’s areas of expertise, with a focus on computer vision, machine learning and advanced AI techniques such as deep learning. The successful candidate will work under the supervision and guidance of the SuPerWorld Research Group Leader, Dr Andreas Kamilaris.


  1. To apply novel AI/ML/DL techniques on various real-world challenges relating to environmental monitoring and modelling
  2. To contribute to the research activities of the group
  3. To contribute to various European- and locally funded research projects
  4. To prepare, submit and publish high-quality research papers

Your profile
Profile of the ideal candidate: 
  1. Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative and work independently.    
  2. Good analytical skills coupled with attention to detail.  
  3. Dynamic, adaptable, hands-on and results driven.
  4. A team player with an ability to work independently and under pressure. 
  5. High levels of commitment, energy, and drive.

General qualifications and requirements
General qualifications and requirements
  1. BSc degree in Computer Science or in an area/field related to AI, computer vision, machine learning and/or deep learning.
  2. MSc degree in a specialization in data analysis, probabilistic modelling, earth observations, satellite imagery analysis and/or geographical systems is an advantage.[NK1] 
  3. Good coding skills (e.g. Python) is important.
  4. Knowledge of GIS tools is a plus (e.g. ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS).
  5. Confidence in mathematics (e.g., linear algebra, probabilistic methods).
  6. Proven experience with ML/DL frameworks (e.g. PyTorch, Keras).
  7. Self-motivation, ability to work independently, and excellent problem-solving skills.
  8. Prior publications in the area are desirable but not essential.
  9. Language requirements: Excellent written and oral English-language skills will be required.

It sets out to meet the challenge with a total potential funding of more than 30 million Euros for the first 7 years, from a Horizon 2020 Teaming Action and multiple other sources, and a business plan for long-term sustainability and growth.
